Hello!

We are Afam & Kwenza Onyenakala

 Founders of Adaobi Fertility.

Our
Story

Get to Know Us

We are a British couple with a lived experience of fertility treatment in the United Kingdom. As we did not meet the eligibility criteria for NHS funding, we were left with no alternative but to go through the route of privately funded care. There were a number of challenges we faced along the way, but our faith in God along with our personal resolve enabled us to keep going and realise our dream. Inspired by the birth of our daughter after 5 rounds of IVF, the name Adaobi means 'first daughter of the family' in the Nigerian Igbo language. Our journey has birthed our passion to support  couples who find themselves in a similar situation.

Read more of our story in the book 'God of all Comfort - A testimony of faith & perseverance through infertility'. Proceeds from the book will also go towards our fundraising objectives.

Who we target

"Infertility is when a couple cannot get pregnant (conceive) despite having regular unprotected sex...  More than 8 out of 10 couples where the woman is under 40, will conceive naturally within a year if they have regular unprotected sex (every 2 or 3 days)" (NHS, 2023).

Where a couple requires fertility treatment to conceive, the funding eligibility will be at the discretion of regional Integrated Care Boards (formerly known as Clinical Commissioning Groups) within the UK.

"The National Institute  for Health and Care  Excellence (NICE) â€‹guidelines recommend that Clinical Commissioning Groups in England offer three full IVF cycles to women under 40 and one full cycle to women aged 40-42 without children, but the reality is that NHS funded IVF provision varies across the country" (Human Fertility & Embryology Authority (HFEA), 2019).

At Adaobi Fertility, our fund raising efforts are targeted at supporting couples who are diagnosed with infertility, which was also our lived experience.  We understand the unique challenges that couples face while going through fertility treatment. Part of our support includes marriage enrichment workshops for those who are struggling with the condition of infertility.

Our Work

1

EDUCATION

Bringing fertility awareness in the public and to targeted communities that have been identified by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority (HFEA) to be lacking in engaging with fertility care. This includes people from a global majority background within the UK.

We focus on bringing fertility education in a way that embodies people's varying cultural, traditional, faith, and religious beliefs.

We also communicate and encourage the balance between observing beliefs and seeking medical care. Our blog shares educational content related to fertility issues.

2

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

We aim to create a safe online space in which couples can share their experiences and encourage each other. In due course we will create a local community hub where couples can meet periodically for mental health support during their journey. We will collaborate with other organisations and professionals for tailormade support.

We also offer targeted faith-based support to those who this is an important part of their journey.

We keep abreast with new developments in the fertility sector and encourage the seeking of credible medical advice before making any decisions regarding specialist care.

3

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

We raise funds to assist couples diagnosed with infertility who are facing the challenges of fertility treatment costs.

We then provide grants to cover any part of the fertility treatment process.

Funds we raise also contribute to our educational and mental health workshops to empower and support the mental health of people going through infertility.
